How to Get More Google Reviews as a Tradesman

Google reviews can make or break your trade business. Here's a practical, no-nonsense guide to getting more of them, without being pushy.

Why Google Reviews Matter for Tradespeople

When someone searches for a tradesperson and sees two options. one with 47 five-star reviews and one with 3 reviews. who do you think they call? Google reviews are the modern-day word of mouth.

93%

of consumers read reviews before hiring a tradesperson

4.0+

star rating is the minimum most customers will consider

#1

factor in Google's local map pack ranking algorithm

Reviews don't just build trust. they directly affect your Google ranking. More positive reviews = higher position in the map pack = more calls.

1. Ask at the Right Moment

Timing is everything. The best moment to ask for a review is right after you've completed a job and the customer is happy with the result. They're standing there looking at their new bathroom, their fixed boiler, or their freshly plastered walls — that's when the satisfaction is highest.

What to say: "Really glad you're happy with the work. If you've got 30 seconds, it'd be brilliant if you could leave us a quick Google review, it really helps us out. I'll send you a link now."

2. Make It as Easy as Possible

The biggest reason customers don't leave reviews is because it's too much hassle. They have to find your business, navigate to the review section, and figure out what to write. Remove every barrier:

Create a direct review link

Go to your Google Business Profile, click "Get more reviews", and copy the short link. This takes customers directly to the review form, no searching required.

Send it via text or WhatsApp

Most tradespeople communicate with customers via text. Send the link with a short message right after the job is done.

Add it to your invoice

Include a "Leave us a Google review" link or QR code at the bottom of every invoice you send.

Create a QR code

Print a QR code on a card that you hand to customers after every job. They scan it and it opens the review page instantly.

3. Follow Up (Without Being Annoying)

Not everyone will leave a review on the spot. A gentle follow-up 24-48 hours after the job is perfectly acceptable and often doubles your review rate.

Follow-up text template:

"Hi [Name], just checking everything's still working well after yesterday. If you've got a moment, we'd really appreciate a quick Google review — it helps other customers find us. Here's the link: [your review link]. Thanks again!"

One follow-up is fine. Two at most. Don't bombard people, it damages the relationship you've built.

4. Respond to Every Review

This is the step most tradespeople skip. and it's a missed opportunity. Responding to reviews shows potential customers that you care, and Google factors review responses into your ranking.

Responding to positive reviews:

"Thanks so much, [Name]! Really glad you're happy with the [service]. It was a pleasure working on your [project]. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you need anything in the future."

Responding to negative reviews:

"Hi [Name], sorry to hear you weren't fully satisfied. We take all feedback seriously. Could you give us a call on [number] so we can put this right? We want to make sure you're happy with the work."

5. Build Reviews Into Your Process

The tradespeople with the most reviews aren't doing anything special. they've just made it a habit. Build review requests into your standard workflow:

1

Complete the job

Do great work, this is the foundation of getting good reviews.

2

Ask in person

Mention it casually as you're finishing up. Keep it natural.

3

Send the link

Text or WhatsApp the direct review link within an hour of finishing.

4

Follow up once

If no review after 48 hours, send one friendly reminder.

5

Respond

Reply to the review within 24 hours to show you're engaged.

What NOT to Do

Never buy fake reviews. Google detects them and will penalise or suspend your listing

Don't offer discounts or incentives for reviews, it violates Google's terms of service

Don't ask friends and family who weren't customers to leave reviews

Don't argue with negative reviews publicly, take it offline

Don't leave it too long, ask within 24-48 hours while the experience is fresh

The Bottom Line

Getting Google reviews isn't about tricks or hacks. it's about doing good work and making it easy for happy customers to tell others about it. Make asking for reviews a non-negotiable part of every job, and within a few months you'll have a review profile that puts you ahead of most competitors.

Aim for consistency over volume. Five reviews a month is better than 30 in one week and then nothing for six months. Google values a steady flow of fresh reviews.
